Over the last six months or so I’ve become really fascinated with the Iraq war.
I’m not for this war what so ever! I’ve come to finally realized that the United states is in the longest war involving U.S. soldiers since Vietnam, and the costliest since W.W.II. This is our generation going through this. Those are our brothers and boyfriends and pieces of our families over there fighting and everybody just wants to pretend that nothing’s going on.
I really don’t understand where all the flower children have gone? The Iraq war looks like the American experience in vietnam only no one wants to have a voice or rally against this war. One of the most obvious reasons to me why people aren’t marching against this was is because there hasn’t been a draft. Another reason i think may be because people aren’t really getting to see what’s going on over there. Unlike vietnam we don’t get to see the coffins arrive on the air-force base and the president doesn't attend military funerals and the television never shows the dead solders or the wounded ones. All these things combined kill the wars impact on our society.
It just hurts my heart see our country go through this and to see that people don’t want to stand up for it. Even people that are for this war aren’t standing out and showing there pride. It’s like America is numb to this whole thing. I feel like it going to come and bite us right in the butt and we are going to have no idea what to do or how to handle it.

I disagree; I think there are plenty of voiced opinions regarding the war, both in favor and in protest. In fact, every time I turn on the T.V. I see more anti-war propaganda, blatant and subtle. We just live in a different era; in the times of the Vietnam War we didn't have such a digital society. Protesters are turning toward internet, T.V., and radio more and more instead of rallies, parades and marches, although these things do still happen.
This is not to stay that I'm pro-war, I hate blood shed just as much as the next guy. However, I do feel that the answer is not to pull out, that would cause more problems than we have now, but we should change the manner in which it's fought (but that's a different matter for a different day, I'm sure).
EDIT: Reposted for spelling o.O
Look around you, half the people around you and I don't even realize we are in the middle of a WAR. It's not being advertised, not really..only to news goers and that’s not enough. nobody is hearing the real truth.
this why i’m not for this war, In 2001 Bush thought that Iraq was making weapons of mass destruction; right after Bush starting building a case against Iraq both of his assumptions proved WRONG. assumptions being: That Iraq was building chemical and nuclear weapons and that al-quaeda was forming groups with Sudan.
They searched Iraq for those nuclear weapons and wound up with nothing. We ended screwing around there to long so Sunni and Shiite militants attacked us. So now we've created all this kayos in Iraq, Bush can't even keep a reason for us to be there; he changes it all the time.
The spring anniversary for war in 2008 objective remains the same as it did 5 years ago and that's unclear.
that's why i think we should get out of there, we have zip, zero, good reasons for being there.
Interesting. If the news isn't enough, what other means should be used to spread information about the war? And in what manner? Also, where did you get your information and how easy was it for you to find it?
To me, if somebody is so out of contact with the news to be unaware that we're in war, then they wouldn't be interested either way, as the information is very readily available for anyone who is.
I'm not trying to force my opinion on you here I'm just doing the assignment. So get of your high horse and realize your opinion isn't the only. My information comes from all the same resources anybody else has, It has taken time, reading and listening for me to gather all this information. They should be teaching kids about the war in school, they should have more(what's really happening) about it in the papers, talk about the war on the radio and the news should give it a few more minutes then the 60 second through down.
we're just going to have to agree to disagree.
I apologize if you misunderstood me, but I assure you I'm not trying to push my opinion on you either, nor did I think you were doing so.
I'm simply trying to say that I think the information is available to those who want it.
It's great to see a lively debate here.
It would be interesting to know what facts aren't necessarily being reported as rigorously as they were during Vietnam--that might be a good subject to pursue. For instance, the news has reported that over 4,000 US troops have died, but how many have lost limbs or become otherwise permanently disabled? Also, how many Iraqi civilians have died? That number has not shown up in the mainstream media for a long time (I've been looking) and it would be informative to know. These are facts that are not in themselves pro- or anti-war, but being aware of them might help people to form educated opinions.
Okay-Dokie
If you would like some first hand insight into this unfounded war walk across the street from Clark and go visit the VA center there. From there take a free shuttle to the main
VA branch here in Portland. This shuttle runs M-F all day. Spend a couple hours there just observing. It could be a real... educational experience.
Oh, one of my favorite media sources is OPB via the radioizzle, 91.5 fm. Any other media sources out there i should know about?
